Bits and Pieces

Let’s start with the quiz!

Get out your device, use the access code on the board, and complete the quiz!

Quick Review

  • Sociolinguistics is the study of the interaction of language and social factors
    • No one speaks the same way all the time!
    • All languages change!
  • A dialect is a language variety characteristic of a particular regional, ethnic, or social group
    • Everyone has a dialect!
    • Dialects aren’t bad!
  • Phonetics is the study of the sounds in a language
  • A phonetic alphabet is a system of transcription which represents each speech sound with a single symbol and each symbol with a single speech sound
    • International Phonetic Alphabet (or IPA)
    • Eliminates the ambiguity of the sound-symbol variations within a language or across languages
  • Why can’t we just use English alphabet?! ::: {.notes}

Can refer back to quiz; you can also show this little video if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZV40f0cXF4 (I Love Lucy)

Where do dialects come from?

Activity time!

Part I: The IPA

You can work together on this. Using the IPA charts in Canvas (Files > Additional Resources), translate these words to English:

[ɪnstənsəz]

[ənawnsmənts]

[ənhæpinɪs]

[mɛnʧənɪŋ]

[bodeʃəs]

Now, see if you can write your name using the alphabet!

Do you pronounce any of these words differently?

Part II: Regional variation in words

You can work together on this one, too. Someone in the group needs to navigate to https://www.daredictionary.com/. Then, search these words in the search box.

Antigodlin

Elbedritsch

Honeyfuggle

Nebby

Pungle

For each word, jot down the meaning and where it is found (where available). Have you heard it before?

Next week!

  • Monday and Wednesday in Singletary
    • SPOTLIGHT: What methods and ethics of inquiry are used?
    • New module! Language in the world! How do kids learn to talk?
  • Friday = Quiz 7
  • Observation notes #3 due tonight by 11:59pm (not late, not AI) ::: {.notes}

Mention that the Data Collection assignments have gone live. They can get started on the “Data” one, but they probably want to wait until after Monday’s spotlight lecture to do the “Questions about…” one.
